Since the new tax regime became the default, most people need to actually run the numbers to know whether switching to the old regime — with its deductions for 80C, 80D, HRA, and home loan interest — would save them more. Doing that by hand means applying two different slab structures, two different standard deductions, and two different rebate thresholds. This income tax calculator does both at once.

Below the calculator, this page explains the FY 2025-26 slabs for both regimes, how the Section 87A rebate works, and answers common questions. If your situation involves capital gains, multiple income sources, or you'd rather have it reviewed before filing, our income tax return filing service covers that.

Quick answer

This income tax calculator for India applies the FY 2025-26 slabs for both the new regime (0% up to ₹4 lakh, rising to 30% above ₹24 lakh) and the old regime (0% up to ₹2.5 lakh, rising to 30% above ₹10 lakh), then adds the standard deduction, Section 87A rebate, surcharge, and 4% cess — showing both totals side by side so you can compare.

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Which regime should I choose — old or new?+

The new regime usually works out cheaper if your total deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest, etc.) are below roughly ₹3.75–4.25 lakh a year. Above that, the old regime can work out lower. This calculator shows both side by side so you can compare for your own numbers.

What is the Section 87A rebate?+

It's a rebate that makes your tax liability nil if your taxable income is within a threshold — ₹12,00,000 under the new regime (FY 2025-26) or ₹5,00,000 under the old regime. Above that threshold, you pay tax on the full slab-wise calculation with no partial rebate.

Does this income tax calculator include surcharge and cess?+

Yes. Health and education cess (4%) is always included. Surcharge is added for income above ₹50 lakh, applying the standard slabs. This calculator does not apply marginal relief on surcharge, which can lower the amount payable right at a threshold — for income above ₹50 lakh, treat the surcharge figure as indicative and confirm with a professional.

I'm not salaried — does the standard deduction apply to me?+

No. The standard deduction (₹75,000 under the new regime, ₹50,000 under the old regime) applies only to salary income. Leave the "salaried" option unticked if your income is from business, profession, or other sources.

Is this calculator only for individuals?+

Yes, it uses individual resident taxpayer slabs. Companies, firms, and LLPs are taxed differently and are not covered by this tool.

Can I rely on this for filing my actual return?+

Use it to estimate your liability and compare regimes. For actual filing, especially if you have capital gains, multiple income sources, or complex deductions, have it reviewed — our income tax return filing service covers exactly that.
